Google has redesigned its Google+ social network with more of a focus on Communities and Collections. The updated service has become more mobile-friendly and is situated around helping make “life easier for people.” If you’re interested in giving this design a try, Google is requesting that you opt-in by going here.
Even though the first instance of a Google-powered social network may not have gone off smoothly, that hasn’t stopped the company from trying again. The company is putting more of a focus on two areas around discussion that it show promise of taking off. The first is Google+ Communities, a product that debuted in 2012 to rival that of Facebook Groups. Google says that there on average, 1.2 million new people join a community every day.
The next focus is around Collections, which was released in May. This brought together a Facebook and Pinterest-like service to let people share content easily. Content is shared on cards and you can select different boards to share the content to.
Focusing on mobile is especially telling as the company involved the help of Luke Wroblewski, a well-respected interface designer and founder of the polling startup Polar, which Google acquired in 2014. He has been active on making design more accessible no matter on which device it appears, and now the new Google+ should have a similar appearance everywhere. Updated apps for iOS and Android devices are supposed to roll out “in the coming days.”
